I’m Tom Hailey and this is The Break Out Session Podcast.

I’m working on having clarity about my projects, including podcasting.

For example, I have another podcast named Bluegrass Region Voices and Views. It began as Kentucky Voices and Views.

I decided that was too broad a topic because I like to do my interviews in person, and I don’t want to travel that much. By making it Bluegrass Region Voices and Views, I can mostly stay within Fayette County and the 17 or so counties that make up the Inner Bluegrass Region of Kentucky.

Now that I have the geography defined I’m working on further refining what it’s about.

When I began the Bluegrass Region Voices and Views project, I thought I would be covering lots of fun things in this region, using various forms of media.

I planned to attend events such as festivals, outdoor concerts, art fairs, and other events and use video and photography along with podcasting to highlight them and post that content on my website, YouTube channel, and podcast. I also thought about becoming involved with the tourism community to find more things to feature.

But Covid hit and I was forced to slow all of those plans down.

I’m studying the book Make Noise, A Creators Guide to Podcasting and Great Storytelling by Eric Nuzman.

It is encouraging me to focus on what I’m really wanting Bluegrass Region Voices and Views to be about.

The first exercise he leads is developing a ten word focus sentence that describes what the project is about.  I’m working on writing a ten word description sentence and having it dialed in by the end of this month, March 2022.

Here’s the focus sentence so far:

“Conversations with inspiring and creative people around the Bluegrass Region.”

One thing it has going for it is that it is exactly ten words.

Another is that it inspires me because it does describe the kind of people I want to spend time with.

Another thing I like about it is that it focuses on the podcasting part of what I originally imagined for this project. That’s Conversations.

I’ve found that attending a lot of activities to photograph and film and report on is a bit more of an ambitious project for me as a solo creator than I want to spend time and energy and money on at this time.

The travel and time involved with covering events and editing the material would take a lot away from podcasting. Which is my priority.

So, for at least 2022, I’m going to focus on having fun with friends and making new ones by interviewing, in person, inspiring and creative people mostly around the Lexington, Fayette County Kentucky area and the surrounding seventeen Inner Bluegrass Region counties. I will add some conversations with friends in Louisville and Northern Kentucky, but mostly I’ll stick close to home.

Next I’ll focus on the WHY to do this, and then the WHO might listen.
