You’re familiar with the quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson that “if you want something you’ve never had you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.”

One of those life-changing things we can begin to do is to expand our social universe. That is, we can be deliberate about meeting people who are different from us and who exist in different social realms. We need fresh ideas and inspiration to get out of a rut and see things from a fresh perspective. And people we have not yet met need us.

“The people you just met today are your ticket to a whole new social universe.” – Tanya Menon

I am one of those people who “has not wandered far from the barn.”

Going forward, I will be more inefficient and deliberately random in creating accidental contacts. To do that, I’ll have to learn to fight my social filters and be willing to let serendipity happen. The Ted Talk will make these concepts understandable.

Tanya Menton doesn’t use the word serendipity in her Ted Talk.  Some of the most wonderful occurrences in my life have been as a direct result of what she talks about, and I have always thought of that word when “it” happened.

For clarity, here is the definition of serendipity: “the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.”

“a fortunate stroke of serendipity.” “the consequence of serendipity is sometimes a brilliant discovery.”

In Tanya Mentons Ted Talk, she gives the following advice:

  1. Use a more imperfect social engine.
  2. Be courageous in traveling your social universe.
  3. Reach out to people as partners rather than resources.

These ideas will be explained, to your advantage, in this Ted Talk.
